Why visit Atins and the Lençois Maranheses at least once in your life

The image shows two people walking along the edge of a body of vibrant blue water, surrounded by smooth white sand dunes that create a striking contrast. The scene is serene and somewhat surreal, reminiscent of a desert oasis. The sky is not visible, focusing the view on the interaction between the earthy tones of the sand and the refreshing blue of the water, with the human figures adding a sense of scale and life to the landscape.
The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is 250 km away from the capital of Maranhão, São Luís, being the largest dune field in South America thanks to its more than 1550 km² of extension.

These dunes are mostly made up of quartz, making the sand temperature pleasant.

The beauty of its landscapes can be admired between May and August, just after the rainy season. The water is trapped between the dunes and the water table, which is only a few meters away from the surface, creating thousands of lagoons and leaving an image that will leave you speechless.

As one moves away from the rainy season, the water level of the lagoons decreases, although there are many that never disappear. This, added to the strong winds, causes the dunes to start moving, up to 10 cm per day. Thus, only the inhabitants really know how to orient themselves in this particular setting.

The Lençóis can be visited in several ways

It will depend on the type of experience you are looking for, the time you want to spend there and the distance you want to travel. You should know that vehicles are only authorized in a specific area of the Park. Perfect for a half or full day visit, or just to enjoy the sunset; all without depriving yourself of the privilege of contemplating its landscapes or bathing in its crystal clear freshwater lagoons.

To fully enjoy the Lençóis, you have to go to the various oases that are there. You will have to walk, or go on horseback, for various days or even a week, as it is the only way to preserve this nature reserve, unique in the world. You will move at times when the sun is the weakest, stopping in the few rustic huts scattered around the park, to eat, swim and regain your strength. When night falls, you will be ready for dinner, with one of the local families, where you will also rest in your hammock, under the same roof as the rest of the visitors.

An experience where you will come into contact with nature, with the local population and with yourself. It is a place from which you do not return as you came, but loaded with sensations and memories that you can only get here.

Atins is one of the gateways to the Lençóis Maranhenses Park, without a doubt the best access point to the Park. Although there are other villages close to the Lençóis, such as Santo Amaro, there is nothing comparable with Atins, a much sought-after destination with a unique energy.

To get to Atins, there are several possibilities

The most convenient way is to cross the Preguiça River by boat from Barreirinhas, a trip that lasts about an hour and in which you will discover changing vegetation as you enter saltier waters. The most memorable way is to do a half-hour downwind from Caburé beach, located on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the river. And finally, another way, however not recommended, is to go there by car from Barrerinhas. Quite a risky trip, as there is no road, only very deep loose sand, which makes it very easy to get disoriented and end up with the vehicle stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Kite season in Atins runs from July to December, and its beach is a great place to learn or just have fun

The river and the wind have created a lagoon with calm and shallow waters, protected from the force of the ocean by large sandbanks. Its beach undergoes changes every year due to weather conditions, so it is very important to always have the advice of specialized people to make the most of this spot.

If you want a little more emotion, you can always kite at the mouth of the lagoon with the Atlantic, or go even further. You will enjoy unforgettable views, as well as more demanding conditions, ideal if you like thrills.

Without a doubt, one of the dreams of every kitesurfer is to kite in the Lençóis, but it is not something that can be done all the time. Several conditions must be met for this to be possible. You will have to head for the lagoons which have enough water and which are as close as possible to the ocean, to guarantee you the best wind possible.

If you already wanted to come, now you have enough reasons to want to visit Atins and the Lençóis Maranhenses Park. Destinations that you must see and feel, at least once in your life, with the guarantee that it will be a unique and unforgettable experience.
